Many Australians and New Zealanders affectionately and jokingly refer to their British counterparts as ‘poms’, and it is also commonly used as a term of endearment. Therefore, ‘pom’ was a reference to the people of the British Commonwealth. It is believed that the name is also a reference to the Commonwealth of Australia and New Zealand, which were both part of the British Empire when this originated. Soon, this was picked up by the people living in Australia and New Zealand and the term gradually became a nickname for British people. ![]() This research contributes to the case for CS’s use in nuclear decommissioning by characterising the behaviour of the grout, working with industry to identify applications for it in decommissioning, and identifying ways of modifying and improving its properties to best fit these and to reduce its cost. These advantages give CS potential to make aspects of nuclear decommissioning cheaper, faster, and safer, but its application has thus far been limited. CS may also be suitable for other decommissioning applications, such as encapsulating radioactive waste canisters, or as a spray coating for contaminated dust. Unlike standard cementitious grouts, CS is non-toxic and environmentally-friendly, has nano-scale particle size, allowing superior penetration, has precisely controllable gelation time, and presents no risk of ground disturbance. CS gel’s very low hydraulic conductivity facilitates its use as a hydraulic barrier, but CS also strengthens weak soils and has potential as a chemical barrier, being able to trap radioactive ions of Cs-137 and Sr-90 via chemical sorption. Colloidal silica (CS) is a novel grouting material with water-like viscosity, which allows it to be injected into soil at minimal pressure to fill free porosity, where it eventually transitions into a rigid hydrogel without change in volume. Disturbances from surface-level decommissioning operations exacerbate the risk of contaminant release into the environment via groundwater and airborne particulate. Legacy nuclear sites often feature regions of contaminated soil, and containment structures which have deteriorated over time. These findings may allow, for example, stronger, more durable, and potentially cheaper barriers to be produced for nuclear decommissioning. This has been done using different additives, by adjusting the properties of the grout itself, or those of its surroundings. Through experimental investigation, various ways have been identified to improve the mechanical performance of colloidal silica, and potentially reduce its cost. At nuclear sites, it has been injected into soil to act as a barrier to trap underground contaminants, but it may have other decommissioning applications. Colloidal silica is a water-like liquid which, after a desired period, will transition into a rigid gel. The focus of this project is to make the case for colloidal silica in decommissioning by modifying and enhancing its properties, aiming to reduce the risk, cost, and complexity of operations. Colloidal silica is a novel, environmentally friendly grout with advantages over standard materials, but it isn’t yet widely used in decommissioning. The risks and high complexity of nuclear decommissioning operations makes them expensive and time consuming with current techniques. In Collaboration with: National Nuclear Lab If you’re not sure how, this article explains some of the Photo RAW masking tools. With a little work you can quickly refine the AI generated mask to be more accurate. When this happens, you need to be prepared to use the other masking tools and controls in On1 Photo RAW to refine the mask. Because there wasn’t an accurate selection around the building, we saw quite large areas of the original sky still showing. We saw this in the example of replacing the sky in the church image in the video. But that doesn’t necessarily fit with every use of a mask. I’ve decided this feathering is to help blend the adjustments you make. It also doesn’t produce an accurate mask of an object but tends to include feathering around the edges. It seems to be fine where there is a clear and obvious subject in the image but not as good with landscapes. Having watched the video, you will no doubt have identified the problem with this first release of the AI tool. In it you will see the features we’ve already discussed along with an example of using AI Adaptive Presets. ![]() This is probably a good time to watch my review video. ![]() These make use of the new AI technology to apply adjustments and filters to an image based on what subjects the AI detects. But new to Photo RAW 2023 are AI Adaptive Presets. Typically, they include adjustments in multiple sections of the Edit module. Presets in On1 Photo RAW are a collection of saved adjustments you can apply to an image. By clicking the Sky option and choosing the Glow filter we apply that filter to the image and create a mask selecting the sky.īut the integration of AI into Photo RAW 2023 doesn’t end here. These are the areas or subjects identified by the AI software. In this example, you can see the list has the options All, None, Natural Ground, Water and Sky. Now you can also choose which area of the image you want to apply the filter to. But there’s a new addition to the dialog in Photo RAW 2023. Photo RAW then displays the Filters dialog where you can click a filter from the list to add it. To add a new filter to an image we click the “Add Filter” button at the top. In the Photo RAW edit module, we would select the “Effects” tab which lists the filters. In case you didn’t notice in the screenshot, the dropdown menu contains a list of the Photo RAW filters you can select. We could do this using the Super Select AI tool and the dropdown menu. Let’s imagine we want to add a Glow filter to the sky using On1. You can then use this in other areas of the Photo RAW software. But what it’s also doing is assigning those objects to different categories where it recognises them. From the description above, you will realise that the AI component of the software is identifying what it thinks are objects within an image. More AI Features in On1 Photo RAW 2023Įarlier I said that On1 has integrated AI throughout Photo RAW 2023 and that the Super Select AI tool was a good way to understand how. ![]() ![]() When you have finished using Super Select AI, click the “Done” button in the toolbar. Alternatively, you can create and adjust more selections using the Super Select AI tool. You can now adjust the settings in the Local adjustment panel. This contains the adjustment you chose and has a mask applied, created from the selection made with the Super Select AI tool. When you add an adjustment, you will find it in the “Local” tab of the On1 Photo RAW adjustment on the right of the interface. As you move your mouse pointer over each, you will see a preview of that adjustment applied to the selection.Īfter choosing the adjustment you want to apply, click the “Add” button in the toolbar. In the menu you will find an “Adjustments” section listing the different adjustments you can use. Those stickers can turn the artist into a celebrity: Fans can even donate via WeChat Pay to the creators of their favorite stickers. While WeChat has an official sticker library, users love the customizable sticker collections that anybody can upload for public consumption. Like Facebook or Apple's iMessage, WeChat offers stickers - cute graphics that can spice up your text conversations. ![]() WeChat's online stickers come with their own backstory. In fact, in China, it's basically impossible to do anything without access to WeChat: It's used to pay for food, order from shops, and is beginning to be used as a virtual ID for social security by the Chinese government, according to the South China Morning Post.Ī report published by Tencent in 2018 says WeChat aims to embed itself in "every moment of the user's daily life, from morning till night, anytime, anywhere." Kimberly Whitler, a marketing professor at the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business, says that it's pretty close to its goal.Ī sticker collection created by a local artist.
